Transfiguration Anthem for SATB voices (Soprano descant) and Piano; words from Mark 9:2-8; music by William Rose - an anthem from Abingdon Press Choral Club volume 17.1 (Winter - Spring 2007)

Imagine what Peter, James, and John thought as they went up the mountain with Jesus, seeing his radiance, and hearing the voice of God proclaim Jesus, God’s Son. This anthem celebrates the journey in a gospel style. An eight-measure introduction establishes the energetic bounce that permeates the setting. Unison voices dominate the refrain with chords highlighting “see my Lord!” Stanza 1 remains unison telling of the journey up the mountain. Stanza 2, Jesus robed in white, is sung by unison men with divided women interjecting responses. Stanza 3 reveals the presence of the prophets, set for SATB voices. A quick key change from F major to G major restates the refrain with a descant addition. The anthem quiets into the concluding chords, “My Lord!”

Your accompanist should be familiar with the gospel style and syncopation for this anthem. The patterns repeat with great frequency, so once learned, the anthem becomes repetitious. The harmonic structure is predictable, presenting no unusual vocal challenges.

Performance options include extracting the final refrain, measure 60 to the end, as a call to worship. You may add bass guitar to the left hand of the keyboard part. The descant may be omitted. An A/P CD is available for this anthem - item # 0687335779.

Appropriate days: Transfiguration Sunday.
