Professor at George W. Truett Seminary, Baylor University, since 1997, holding two chairs: the William M. Hinson Professor of Christian Scriptures, and the Charles J. and Eleanor McLerran DeLancey chair of the Dean. He also served twice as the interim President of Baylor University and once as the interim Provost. He previously taught for twenty-one years at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary as inaugural Ernest and Mildred Hogan Professor of New Testament Chair. He is the author of sixteen books, including commentaries on Matthew, Mark, Luke, Acts, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Philippians, Colossians and Philemon, and the Theology of Mark and is currently working on Romans. His books have won awards from Christianity Today and the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association and have been translated into Korean, Spanish, Russian, and Portuguese. He earned his B.A. at Oklahoma Baptist University, his M.Div. and Ph.D. at Southern Seminary, and did post graduate study at Eberhard-Karls Universität in Tübingen, Germany, and Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.
