Book Review: Jesus the King by Timothy Keller
Jesus the King by Timothy Keller explores the life of Jesus as told in the Gospel of Mark. Timothy Keller dives deep into Scripture to unpack Jesus’ character, identity, and purpose so that readers can get a better understanding of who Jesus truly is. He encourages readers to look at the story of Jesus and how it calls us to view our relationship with God in a new and positive light.
The book is separated into two different sections: The King & The Cross. The chapters in the first section (The King) really looks at Jesus’ identity and character. Jesus is not just a king, but the King. He is the Messiah, the Son of Man, the Son of God. Keller dives deeper into Jesus’ power, sovereignty, authority, and divinity within these first chapters. He explores the various healings and actions of Jesus so that we, as readers, can get more insight as to why He performs certain actions in specific ways. The first section really gives us a better understanding to who Jesus truly is.
The second half of the book focuses on the purpose of why Jesus came to Earth; The Cross. Jesus’ main purpose was to die on the cross so that our sins would be forgiven and that we could have new life through Him. By Jesus dying on the cross, we are able to have a relationship with God. Jesus took God’s wrath upon Himself so that we would not have to bear it ourselves. These chapters dive deeper into Jesus’ sacrifice and what happened leading up to Jesus’ death. The book discusses the substitutionary, sacrificial love that Jesus displayed on the cross. It was out of immense love and grace that we have been saved. The ultimate sacrifice is Jesus, the King, dying for His people so that we could be freed from sin and death.
Timothy Keller provides an insightful book that points us back to the story of Jesus. Keller includes plenty of contextual background details to enhance the understanding of the Scripture as well as easy-to-understand analogies to really drive home the main point of the passage. Throughout the entire book, Keller encourages us to look at how the story of Jesus can shape and transform our relationship with God in a new way. Overall, this is an amazing book that explores the life and death of Jesus in detail while journeying through the Gospel of Mark. Whether you are a new Christian or have been one for a while, this is a great book to dive deeper into the story of Jesus and learn more about the one and only true King.
